AdCamo isn’t winning me over.

I am ever on the lookout for new avenues to monetize my sites and today I came across a not so new method. The company is called AdCamo and it has been qualified as the first background advertising network. However, large websites such as PerezHilton.com and MySpace have been using equivalent methods for some time now. However they typically advertise for well funded brands such as movies and TV shows. Not up until has then form of advertising been available to any joe-shmoe with a dot com.
The concept is simple, like any ad network you sign up and display ads, but along with a banner the advertiser also gets to post their image(s) on your sites background as well. The ads are offered on both a CPC and CPM basis.
Examples:

From a design perspective and as a publisher, those examples make me want to rip my retinas out. However, from the view point of someone who wants to make money via online advertising, this can certainly be added to the arsenal. Im just having a very hard time getting past the in-your-face presense the ad(s) have. And find it difficult to decipher what’s part of the site’s content and what’s part of the ad(s). That reason alone will deter me from using it b/c I know my readers/viewers will have the same problem. Content is the root of a good site/blog despite your intentions. So, in short, the chances of me utilizing this service is slim to none; atleast until the ads become more visually pleasing. But, again, Im not going to throw it to the wolves just yet. In the meantime, I’ll continue to support quality networks like TTZ Media.
